Book Description
Steve Rudge writes in graphic and humorous detail, his life in the Grenadier Guards from 1966 to 1990, it shows how he matured from a 15-year-old boy soldier to becoming a senior Warrant Officer. He served in many places around the world and with numerous Armies; the reader will enjoy the truthful way that the book is written. Harsh and blunt language is used to describe his life for 25 years. This book also gives the authors views on the severe amount of stupidity and bulling that he was subjected too by those in authority, who had used their Rank and position to fulfill their own aims instead of looking after their subordinates or comrades.

Book Description
[Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War] At a regimental gathering following Sir George Higginson’s funeral one officer remarked to another that no-one could remember the regiment without Sir George present. It is hardly surprising as General Sir George Wentworth Alexander Higginson GCB, GCVO had lived for 101 years, the longest of any British General, and as the title of his autobiography indicates the majority of those years in the Grenadier Guards. General Higginson’s life seemed to be in fact two lives; the first in active service with the British army, he would see action in many parts of the world. He would achieve great fame as a hero of the Crimean War and his reminiscences of which forms the greater part of this volume. The Author travelled out to the Crimea as adjutant of the 3rd Battalion; and fought at the battles at Alma, Balaklava and Inkerman at which he was greatly distinguished. His details of the siege and fall of Sebastopol are among the best that survive. He details in full the filthy unsanitary conditions, inept command, and cholera that the British soldiers had to endure, not to mention the shot and shell of tens of thousands of Russian soldiers. Following his military retirement in 1893 at the ripe age of 67 and then embarked on career as advisor to Queen Victoria, travelling dignitary as far afield as America and Russia and figurehead of the regime. A renowned and statesmanlike figure he died in 1927 mourned by all who knew him. A fascinating autobiography.

Book Description
A definitive history of the fatal clash between Vietnam War protestors and the National Guard, illuminating its causes and lasting consequences. On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University in Ohio, political fires that had been burning across America during the 1960s exploded. Antiwar protesters wearing bell-bottom jeans and long hair hurled taunts and rocks at another group of young Americans—National Guardsmen sporting gas masks and rifles. At half past noon, violence unfolded with chaotic speed, as guardsmen—many of whom had joined the Guard to escape the draft—opened fire on the students. Two reductive narratives ensued: one, that lethal state violence targeted Americans who spoke their minds; the other, that law enforcement gave troublemakers the comeuppance they deserved. For over fifty years, little middle ground has been found due to incomplete and sometimes contradictory evidence. Kent State meticulously re-creates the divided cultural landscape of America during the Vietnam War and heightened popular anxieties around the country. On college campuses, teach-ins, sit-down strikes, and demonstrations exposed the growing rift between the left and the right. Many students opposed the war as unnecessary and unjust and were uneasy over poor and working-class kids drafted and sent to Vietnam in their place. Some developed a hatred for the military, the police, and everything associated with authority, while others resolved to uphold law and order at any cost. Focusing on the thirteen victims of the Kent State shooting and a painstaking reconstruction of the days surrounding it, historian Brian VanDeMark draws on crucial new research and interviews—including, for the first time, the perspective of guardsmen who were there. The result is a complete reckoning with the tragedy that marked the end of the sixties.
