This thesis contains an overview of the work that has been done to develop GRIND (a GRaphical INterface for Depend), which is also a design environment and code generator. GRIND's major features are described, and a general tutorial shows how to use the tool to create simulation models. Three models that were constructed using GRIND are presented to illustrate the utility of the tool. Remarks on how the work can be extended are included.

This paper presents a prototype simulation environment for nuclear power plants which illustrates the application of object-oriented programming to process simulation. Systems are modeled using this technique as a collection of objects which communicate via message passing. The environment allows users to build simulation models by selecting iconic representations of plant components from a menu and connecting them with the aid of a mouse. Models can be modified graphically at any time, even as the simulation is running, and the results observed immediately via real-time graphics. This prototype illustrates the use of object-oriented programming to create a highly interactive and automated simulation environment. 9 refs., 4 figs.

Object-Oriented Simulation with Hierarchical, Modular Models: Intelligent Agents and Endomorphic Systems describes an approach to object-oriented discrete event simulation and the concepts of hierarchical, modular model construction, The implementation of the concepts of multifaceted modeling methodology in the DEVS-Scheme modeling and simulation environment is discussed. The use of the DEVS-Scheme environment in modeling artificial intelligent agents is also considered, along with the concept of endomorphism to characterize the application of self-embedded models, including models of self. Subsequent chapters focus on digraph-models and experimental frames; DEVS formalism and DEVS-Scheme simulation environment; a model base for simple multi-computer architectures; and rule-based specification of atomic models. Model bases in endomorphic systems and intelligent agents are also examined. The main objective of this research was to define, design and prototype an open, object-oriented environment consisting of a variety of integrated tools for modeling, analysis, simulation and engineering of computer / communications and other systems such as information systems, business operations and production systems. This environment was to overcome certain problems seen with simulation environments that existed at the time and still persist today. These problems include the lack of: i) a simple to use yet effective performance modeling tool set and ii) an open, integrated, object oriented performance modeling environment using a common programming language and promoting reuse. This report summarizes the results obtained in addressing these problems including an overview of the tools and environments that were prototyped as part of this effort as well as their applications to the performance analysis of some specific communications systems. Issues related to training and education in the use of these tools and environments are also addressed.
