Book Description
Excerpt from A Glimpse of the Great Society M The Ultramontanes are wont to assure all those, who are attached to Constitutional Government in this country, and to the cause of law and order elsewhere, that they can have no such firm allies, as the adherents of the Papacy, the devoted sons of the great central authority of the Roman Catholic Church. But in giving these assurances the Ultramontanes either ignore, or are themselves not aware of the fact, that this central autho rity, to which they are blindly obedient, claims more or less the right to supersede, and is therefore sure, in matters, more or less important, to become antagonistic to any authority that is not absolutely its own, or practically obedient to its behests. Nothing is more astonishing to the uninitiated than the rapidity, with which the Ultramontanes transfer their allegiance from one extreme of political opinion to the other. Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Society: A Psychological Analysis During the last hundred years the external condi tions of civilised life have been transformed by a series of inventions which have abolished the old limits to the creation of mechanical force, the carriage of men and goods, and communication by written and spoken words. One effect of this transformation is a general change of social scale. Men find themselves working and thinking and feeling in relation to an environment, which, both in its world-wide extension and its inti mate connection with all sides of human existence, is without precedent in the history of the world. Book Description
In A Glimpse of Nothingness, celebrated mystery novelist Janwillem van de Wetering offers a sequel to his earlier memoir, The Empty Mirror, which concerned the author's experiences at a Zen monastery in Japan in the middle 1960s. Originally published in 1975, A Glimpse of Nothingness chronicles van de Wetering's time at the Moon Springs Hermitage in Maine. The book offers a complete and compelling description of the Zen path pursued by one sensitive Westerner who began his quest by seeking for the sense of it all-and who eventually came to realize at least a part of it. The follow-up to this book is van de Wetering's Afterzen.
