Spatial Information and the Environment
Author: Peter Halls
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0203302796
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
There is considerable current academic interest in the interface between geographical information systems (GIS) and the environment. This new monograph explores the process from start to finish. It begins with information acquisition in the environment and moves on to tool and techniques for manipulating the information, visualisation and navigation methods for exploring it, and computation and modelling techniques for its analysis. It then concludes with a survey of decision support, for its application. Spatial Information and the Environment is the eighth book in the Innovations in GIS series initiated in 1994. The series is in essence derived from a selection of the presentations made at the annual GIS Research UK conference 2000 held in York, and has now changed its focus by concentrating on a single topic, making each text distinctive.

GIS and Environmental Modeling
Author: Michael F. Goodchild
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 9780470236772
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 536
Book Description
GIS and Environmental Modeling: Progress and Research Issues Michael F. Goodchild, Louis T. Steyaert, Bradley O. Parks, Carol Johnston, David Maidment, Michael Crane, and Sandi Glendinning, Editors With growing pressure on natural resources and landscapes there is an increasing need to predict the consequences of any changes to the environment. Modelling plays an important role in this by helping our understanding of the environment and by forecasting likely impacts. In recent years moves have been made to link models to Geographical Information Systems to provide a means of analysing changes over an area as well as over time. GIS and Environmental Modeling explores the progress made to date in integrating these two software systems. Approaches to the subject are made from theoretical, technical as well as data stand points. The existing capabilities of current systems are described along with important issues of data availability, accuracy and error. Various case studies illustrate this and highlight the common concepts and issues that exist between researchers in different environmental fields. The future needs and prospects for integrating GIS and environmental models are also explored with developments in both data handling and modelling discussed. The book brings together the knowledge and experience of over 100 researchers from academic, commercial and government backgrounds who work in a wide range of disciplines. The themes followed in the text provide a fund of knowledge and guidance for those involved in environmental modelling and GIS. The book is easily accessible for readers with a basic GIS knowledge and the ideas and results of the research are clearly illustrated with both colour and black and white graphics.

Software Development for an Environmental Engineering Analysis System
Author: Chʻi Weng
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Geographic Information System (GIS) and Scientific Visualization (SciVis) are two widely used computer applications for earth science study and research. This project report presents the design and development of a customized GIS and a SciVis tool which are parts of a bigger project that develops a courseware for earth science studies. A study of GIS as well as a survey of available GIS applications is carried out. General functional requirements for a GIS are summarized as the guidelines for the custom GIS design, while the features of other GIS are also taken as reference. The GIS, intended to run on Windows$\sp\circler$95, is developed in Delphi$\sp\circler$2.0 with TIMC Enigma$\sp\circler$GIS Components installed. The work includes requirement analysis, system design, user interface design, and implementation of procedures and functions. The result GIS is a MDI application that has the capabilities to open and save workspaces with multiple child windows performing various GIS and related functions. The SciVis tool is a movie-making program written in C/C++. With the help of Video-for-Windows library, several C functions is written and compiled into a DLL file. The user interface is developed in C++, letting the user to choose a set of bitmap images, write them out as an AVI format file, and play the result. The project is carried out with the intention to be open-ended. Future work is recommended to add more functions and debug them thoroughly enough so that they can be commercialized.
