The rays which here and there appeared, were thought by most to be but reflections or scintill'ations from a pure character and a noble heart. That this carpenter's son could be God's son, was hard to comprehend. And every error which has since prevailed respecting the person and work of Christ, finds its origin in this short-sighted judgment after the outward appearance. Seldom did He declare Himself in actual words. A Samaritan woman of no reputation, a Jewish ruler of the temple conversing with Him at dead of night, a poor impulsive dis cipic - such as these heard Him announce His true Messiahship. Lindsey, D.D., Delivered Upon Closing His Ministry in the First Presbyterian Church, Portland, Oregon I desire this release in order to devote myself to the professorship to which I have been appointed in our Theological Seminary. There are solemn and responsible ties existing between a pastor and the people of his charge, and the relationship should not be dissolved for any consideration which will not bear the approbation of an enlightened conscience. If I were to yield to the dictates of my heart, I should not make this petition. The growing years have made my official relations to you more and more comprehensive, and my affection for you more tender and abiding. The official relation may cease, but my love and friendship for you, death cannot terminate. I have viewed this subject in every light, and having earnestly sought the guidance of God's Spirit, it appears to me that He calls me to this new occupation. I have been lead to regard it as the most im portant appointment that any man could receive. There is no higher calling than the pastoral relation, and the training of those who occupy it, must be the highest responsibility that can ever fall upon any man. It is proper for me to say that I did not seek this appointment. \vhen first addressed upon the subject, I could only say that I would give it serious consideration. There are peculiarities connected with my election to this position that are quite remarkable and almost deprive me of my liberty of choice.
