Re-Embroidering the Robe
Author: Suzanne Bray
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443814946
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
Religious faith, myths and legends have always been present in literature. However, their role has changed over time. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, with the diminishing role of religion in European society, writers with some kind of belief system, whether religious or political, have tended to use myth in two different ways. They have either retold the old, familiar myths of the past so that they carry fresh messages relevant to a contemporary audience or created their own, new myths as modern vehicles of traditional truths. Many writers have combined the two techniques. Such is the transforming artistry which the eighteen essays in Re-Embroidering the Robe examine: the remaking or new-minting of myth, in literature from 1850 to the present day, so that what it embodies and expresses speaks powerfully to the modern reader. In widely differing ways, therefore, all of the texts analysed here compel attention.

Ghosts of Niagara-on-the-Lake
Author: Maria Da Silva
Publisher: Dundurn
ISBN: 1459742141
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 243
Book Description
A new, expanded edition detailing Niagara-on-the-Lake’s ghostly inhabitants. Long-dead British soldiers, grieving lovers, lingering spirits — Niagara-on-the-Lake’s long and colourful history is kept alive by ghosts of its past. Through historical investigation and eyewitness accounts, Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva share over two dozen ghostly tales: a murdered British officer haunts the Olde Angel Inn, a ghostly widow retaliates against couples, a condemned ghost at the old courthouse pleads his innocence, and ghostly guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel have no desire to check out. Some have called Niagara on-the-Lake Canada’s most haunted town, and with so much of its built heritage preserved, the community clearly makes the perfect haunt for age-old spirits.

Horror Film Aesthetics
Author: Thomas M. Sipos
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786458348
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
This richly informed study analyzes how various cinematic tools and techniques have been used to create horror on screen--the aesthetic elements, sometimes not consciously noticed, that help to unnerve, frighten, shock or entertain an audience. The first two chapters define the genre and describe the use of pragmatic aesthetics (when filmmakers put technical and budgetary compromises to artistic effect). Subsequent chapters cover mise-en-scene, framing, photography, lighting, editing and sound, and a final chapter is devoted to the aesthetic appeals of horror cinema. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Antipodean Antiquities
Author: Marguerite Johnson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350021245
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
Leading and emerging, early career scholars in Classical Reception Studies come together in this volume to explore the under-represented area of the Australasian Classical Tradition. They interrogate the interactions between Mediterranean Antiquity and the antipodean worlds of New Zealand and Australia through the lenses of literature, film, theatre and fine art. Of interest to scholars across the globe who research the influence of antiquity on modern literature, film, theatre and fine art, this volume fills a decisive gap in the literature by bringing antipodean research into the spotlight. Following a contextual introduction to the field, the six parts of the volume explore the latest research on subjects that range from the Lord of the Rings and Xena: Warrior Princess franchises to important artists such as Sidney Nolan and local authors whose work offers opportunities for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary analysis with well-known Western authors and artists.
