HANNS EISLER'S THIRD PIANO SONATA (1943): An Analysis and Performance Guide by Michael Messer, Doctor of Musical Arts (Piano Performance). ABSTRACT: The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Michael Messer, under the direction of Christopher Taylor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following: I. Written Project: "Hanns Eisler's Third piano sonata (1943): an analysis and performance guide." This 66-page written project compares Eisler's Third sonata with his two earlier sonatas, as well as with Arnold Schoenberg's Three piano pieces, op. 11. Included is a discussion of Eisler's background, politics, relationship with Schoenberg, and how the sonata fits into these topics. The project also contains an annotated score designed to help pianists navigate difficult passages and interpret the music with as much expression as possible. II.
