Book Description
Excerpt from A Dictionary of Artists Who Have Exhibited Works in the Principal London Exhibitions From 1760 to 1893 In the 1880 edition instances occurred where two artists of the same name, not being members of any society, were placed as one; but, by means of reference to the addresses, and - where practicable of communications made to the artists themselves, the exact numbers have now been allotted to each person. In cases where a painter has worked in two or more modes, that in which he has the largest number of exhibits governs his designation. In the section of miniatures more accuracy has been arrived at than before, by regarding each example as an exhibit, whereas, in the 1880 version of the Dictionary, a frame containing several miniatures was counted as one only. Book Description
How to Find Out About the Arts: A Guide to Sources of Information discusses the main sources of information, printed or otherwise, in the field of the arts. The book begins by describing where information on art careers can be found. Separate chapters then discuss how information on art can be traced in libraries by means of the catalogue and classification scheme; and turning to bibliographies when information on a particular aspect of art cannot be traced by these means. Subsequent chapters deal with sources such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, general indexes to reproductions and portraits, works on iconography, periodicals, directories, yearbooks, and sales records. This book aims to serve some of the needs of the student of art, the experienced artist, and indeed all of those with an intelligent interest in the arts. In particular, it should help those in libraries, colleges, and other educational institutions whose task it is to guide others to the right sources.

Book Description
Hwo did the rise of metropolitan art institutions influence modernism and the modernisation of art in England? This volume explores the artist as creator, notions of class and taste, and the power of institutions to affect creativity and artistic expression. Topics discussed include the radicalism of engravers and how their claim to be artists is an important and negkected aspect of the nineteenth-century art world; and how the aesthetic dispute over the Chantrey Bequest epitomized conflicts of taste, cultural independence, and interdependence between opposed art institutions and the Treasury.

Book Description
Physically frail, badly educated girls, brought up to lead useless lives as idle gentlewomen, married to dominant husbands, and relegated to "separate spheres" of life—these phrases have often been used to describe Victorian upper-middle-class women. M. Jeanne Peterson rejects such formulations and the received wisdom they embody in favor of a careful examination of Victorian ladies and their lives. Focusing on a network of urban professional families over three generations, this book examines the scope and quality of gentlewomen's education, their physical lives, their relationship to money, their experience of family illness and death, and their relationships to men (brothers and friends as well as fathers and husbands). Peterson also examines the prominent place of work in the lives of these "leisured" Victorian ladies, both single and married. Far from idle, the mothers, wives, and daughters of Victorian clergymen, doctors, lawyers, university dons, and others were accomplished and productive members of society who made substantial public and private contributions to virtually every sphere of Victorian life.
