A provocative approach to the possibility of philosophical ethics, this study argues that all moral positions and theories are bound to fail. Using the dialectical tensions inherent to competing moral claims as his starting point, Michael Steinmann explains what he terms the “failure of morality” both in classical and contemporary positions. As moral claims lead in various ways to contradictions, the history of morality presents itself as an endless series of controversies. By using dialectical thinking, which has gone out of favour in current philosophy, Steinmann shows how we can capture the limitations of moral theories in a more holistic way. Without embracing skepticism about moral claims, a non-naturalistic and non-relativistic understanding of the good emerges as the fundamental notion of moral thought. Reframing Ethics Through Dialectics reinvigorates the classical notion of “the absolute good” as a fruitful conceptual structure through which to understand competing moral claims, without simply reproducing neo-Aristotelian literature on the good life. From the perspective of the good, the study allows us to take non-traditional theories more seriously, making space for moral philosophy to acknowledge and embrace the contradictions that all positions incur.

"Dialectic" is a fulcrum word. Aristotle attacked this belief, saying that the dialectic was only suitable for some purpose- to enquire into men's beliefs, to arrive at truths about eternal forms of things, known as Ideas, which were fixed and un changing and constituted reality for Plato. Aristotle said there is also the method of science, or "physical" method, which observes physical facts and arrives at truths about substances, which undergo change. Baudelaire ascribed exceptional importance to the arrangement of Les Fleurs du mal. His book, he said, constituted "a perfect whole," which he had arranged according to a preconceived plan. One of his earliest readers, the novelist and critic Barbey d'Aurevilly, spoke of a "secret architecture" and "a plan calculated by the solitary meditative poet," though he did not go into details; and ever since, scholars have pursued the question of structure. This new study offers an exciting reading of the 127 poems of the second edition (1861), which shows that, beyond the meanings of its individual poems, the collection has a sense that we ignore at substantial cost. The author presents a precise dialectical method, a "somber and limpid tete-a-tete" of the poet with himself. The argument is pursued between the poems, which ask to be read with and against each other.
