Book Description
Excerpt from A Deep-Water Voyage For a number of years it had been my keen ambition to make a deep-water voyage, and several times I was on the point of starting to California via the Horn; but just as I had determined upon a vessel, something deterred me each time. At length, after my friends had professed the belief many times that I never would go to sea, and that it was merely a bluff on my part, I determined that, come what would, to sea I should go, and after some little difficulty persuaded my wife that it would be of incalculable benefit to her health; so that she finally decided to try not the Cape Horn voyage, but the passage to the East round the Cape of Good Hope. For many weeks I cast about me to find not only a suitable vessel, but an agreeable and gentlemanly skipper. For taking ones wife to sea is a vastly different affair from going alone and putting up with whatever may happen along. How disagreeable for one's wife it would be to sail with a skipper who proved to be an obdurate, bad-tempered man, who resorted to blows for the men upon every occasion, or who called down sea-blessings by the fathom upon the head of the second mate because the mizzen-royal-yard was braced in an eighth of an inch too much! Book Description
Excerpt from Under the Waves: Or Diving in Deep Waters, a Tale This tale makes no claim to the character of an exhaustive illustration of all that belongs to the art of diving. It merely deals with the most important points, and some of the most interesting incidents connected therewith. In writing it I have sought carefully to exhibit the true and to ignore the false or improbable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Deep Sea's Toll Exactly what that something was Peter could not say. Queer inner workings were not to be argued as if they were Trust or Tariff questions; but this vessel - and she certainly was an able ves sel - and the vessel just before her was an able vessel too - both these vessels, he might say, tear ing around the Point, rails buried and booms drag ging, did suggest in some way Peter couldn't quite reason out, that his intended little voyage was a good idea. Book Description
Excerpt from "On the Bottom" An Epic of Deep-Sea Diving In writing this book he has unconsciously revealed his own personality. We see him as a man of iron will, calmly facing difficulties that to many with equal technical knowledge would have seemed, and did in fact seem, insuperable, confronting every blow of fate with inflexible courage, remaining cheerful when most of those about him were thoroughly disheartened by successive misfor tunes, and finally, by sheer force of character, snatching victory from the very jaws of defeat. We see him, too, as a born leader of men, one of those rare souls who can inspire others with their own indomitable faith and courage, and spur the faint-hearted on to splendid deeds. Book Description
Excerpt from Deep Waters: Or a Strange Story In the latter part of June 18 the little city of Oxford, Miss, was teeming with visitors, not only from various portions of the State, but from the adjoining States of Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana. This concourse of people was no unusual spectacle to the citizens of Oxford; for it was but the gathering that occurred regularly once a year. The center of attraction to this fashionable, well-dressed assemblage was the University of Mississippi, which has sent forth hundreds of young men intellectually equipped for the stern struggle for existence - a struggle. The contemplation and investigation of which gave birth to Mr. Darwin's doctrine of The survival of the fittest. What was the mean ing of this concourse? It was Commencement. Book Description
Excerpt from Men of the Deep Waters For the least show of light about the deck, blinds the officer of the watch temporarily, and makes the darkness of the night a double curtain of gloom, threatening hatefully. You curse, and 'phone angrily for a steward to go along and have the door shut or the window covered, as the case may be; then once again to the dreadful strain of watching.
