Book Description
Excerpt from Course of Lectures on Electricity: Delivered Before the Society of Arts In 1886 I was asked to give a course of lectures to the Society of Arts. Shorthand notes were taken of these lectures, and the first five lectures in the present volume are compiled from these notes, but with some alterations. The lectures were primarily intended for an intelligent audience, ignorant of electrical science, but anxious to obtain sufficient knowledge of the subject to be able to follow the progress now being made in the science. It is to such persons that the following pages may perhaps be useful. The sixth lecture is introduced with the object of showing the applications of the general principles to one department of practical engineering. It was originally delivered at the Electrical Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1884, at the request of the Franklin Institute. In the course of these pages it has been my object to present in clear language the fundamental facts which govern electrical phenomena, and in such a manner as will leave the reader nothing to unlearn. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practical Applications of Electricity: A Series of Lectures Delivered at the Institution of Civil Engineers, Session 1882-83 IN the Report of the Council submitted to the Annual General Meeting in December 1883, it was stated that, as far back as 1868, a suggestion had been made for the establishment of Readerships for the benefit of young Engineers. That idea was not carried out, as the organisation of Supplemental Meetings, for the reading and discussion of Papers by Students of the Institution, was deemed preferable, and to be more in accordance with the usages of the Society. In August 1879, the expediency of having, in addition to the Ordinary Meetings, Lectures on special subjects of engineering was mooted. It was felt that if a limited number of lectures could be arranged in each session, to be delivered by men of eminence, not on the elementary subjects of the class-room, but on the principles involved in the action of the Great Sources of Power in Nature, and their practical applications, the pro visions of Section xiii. Of the By-laws would be met in a proper manner. In March 1882 it was resolved to give effect to this proposal, and arrangements were made for a course of six lectures, by as many lecturers, on the Practical Applications of Electricity. As, however, the Session 1881 - 82 was then far advanced, it was decided to postpone their delivery until the Session 1882-83, when the lectures included in this volume were given. All the lecturers were Fellows of the Royal Society, and Members of The Institution of Civil Engineers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Development and Transmission of Power: From Central Stations The present Treatise is based on the Course of Lectures which the Council of the Society of Arts requested the Author to deliver in January and February 1898. In republishing them under less stringent limitations of time and space many gaps have been filled up and some questions have been discussed more fully. The importance of the problem of distributing power to many consumers can hardly be overrated. In dealing with it the question of cost cannot be put on one side. The financial condi tions are governing conditions, and must be considered together with the mechanical Conditions. An attempt has been made in the present treatise to treat the subject as a whole. Hence the causes of waste in generating power have been discussed as well as the losses in distribution. The subject is so wide and touches so many departments of engineering that it is too much to hope that all the questions involved have been examined with sufl'iciently adequate knowledge.
