Climate Change and Cosmopolitan Obligation
Author: Kerri Woods

Book Description
Climate change presents particular challenges to contemporary theorists of justice. Many accept that present persons have a moral obligation to take action to mitigate the worst predicted effects of climate change. However, justificatory argument defending this obligation in both consequentialist and deontological terms have proved vulnerable to Parfit's well-known non-identity problem and other challenges. This impasse is illustrative of the anachronistic character of currently dominant ethical frameworks. The capacity to influence the fate of future generations and of distant contemporaries on the scale known today is a very recent phenomenon, and was thus not considered in ethical frameworks inherited from earlier moral and political thinkers. In this paper I consider the resources cosmopolitanism offers for thinking about climate change justice. In particular, I argue that while cosmopolitan accounts of human rights and global justice in many ways appear to be least challenged by the capabilities of some to influence the fate of distant others, the intergenerational nature of climate change confounds a cosmopolitan account justice grounded in rights, Kantian constructivism, or consequentialism. Drawing on Robert Goodin's work, I find that the most promising route to a negative account of climate change justice lies in an ethic of responsibility tied to others' vulnerability to our actions. However, a positive account of climate justice is more difficult to establish.

European Union Foreign Policy in a Changing World
Author: Karen E. Smith
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0745658172
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
The second edition of European Union Foreign Policy in a Changing World provides a clear introduction to the complexities of contemporary European foreign policy and offers a fresh and distinctive perspective on the nature of the EU’s international identity. Thoroughly revised and expanded, the book explores how and why the EU tries to achieve five core foreign policy objectives: the encouragement of regional cooperation; the advancement of human rights; the promotion of democracy and good governance; the prevention of violent conflicts; and the fight against international crime, including terrorism. In pursuing these goals, the book illustrates how the EU is faced with acute policy dilemmas because the five objectives not only clash with each other, but also with additional policy priorities – such as securing energy supplies or establishing strategic partnerships with key powers. The uniqueness of the EU as a global actor is carefully assessed, and its key policies and the related dilemmas it faces compared with those of other international actors. This well-written and thoroughly researched book will be a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of European politics, foreign policy analysis, international relations and related disciplines.

The Global Politics of the Environment
Author: Lorraine Elliott
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814722180
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
Human activity is changing the global environment on a scale unlike that of any other era. Environmental deterioration is now a global issue—ecologically, politically, and economically—that requires global solutions. Yet there is considerable disagreement over what kinds of strategies we should adopt in order to halt and reverse damage to the global ecosystem. What kinds of international institutions are best suited to dealing with global environmental problems? Why are women and indigenous peoples still marginalized in global environmental politics? What are the consequences of the global ecological crisis for economic and security policies? The Global Politics of the Environment makes sense of the often seemingly irreconcilable answers to these questions. It focuses throughout on the tensions between mainstream strategies, which seek to build support for reforms through existing institutions, and radical critiques, which argue that environmental degradation is a symptom of a dysfunctional world order that must itself be transformed if we are to meet the challenge of saving the planet.

Cosmopolitan Responsibility
Author: Jan-Christoph Heilinger
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110611287
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
The world we live in is unjust. Preventable deprivation and suffering shape the lives of many people, while others enjoy advantages and privileges aplenty. Cosmopolitan responsibility addresses the moral responsibilities of privileged individuals to take action in the face of global structural injustice. Individuals are called upon to complement institutional efforts to respond to global challenges, such as climate change, unfair global trade, or world poverty. Committed to an ideal of relational equality among all human beings, the book discusses the impact of individual action, the challenge of special obligations, and the possibility of moral overdemandingness in order to lay the ground for an action-guiding ethos of cosmopolitan responsibility. This thought-provoking book will be of interest to any reflective reader concerned about justice and responsibilities in a globalised world. Jan-Christoph Heilinger is a moral and political philosopher. He teaches at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, Germany, and at Ecole normale supérieure, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Cosmopolitan Justice
Author: Darrel Moellendorf
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 042996983X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Increasing global economic integration and recent military interventions in the name of human rights have forced questions of global justice into political discussions. In presenting a systematic account of global duties of justice, Cosmopolitan Justice departs from many contemporary accounts that take the scope of justice to be limited to the state or nation. Is the unequal distribution of wealth across the globe just? Are the most indebted countries obliged to pay back their loans to international financial institutions? Does respecting state sovereignty prohibit intervening in the affairs of other states? What is the moral basis of international law? Cosmopolitan Justice takes on these questions and much more.
