Book Description
The Holy Bible: Complete and How to Understand It, published by author Roswell Hitchcock in 1869, breaks down the verses of the Bible (more than 30,000) based on their meaning into 27 Books, 242 Chapters, and 2,369 Sections. The Holy Bible: Complete and How to Understand It is a perfect tool for the serious Bible scholar and those who want to break the Bible down into its most essential parts. ROSWELL DWIGHT HITCHCOCK (1817-1887) was an American theologian and writer who graduated from Amherst in 1836 and studied at Andover theological seminary. Hitchcock was a professor at Bowdoin College in Maine and Union Theological Seminary in New York City and was also the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Exeter, New Hampshire, from 1945-1952. He was elected president of the American Palestine Exploration Society in 1871 (after his many travels to Palestine and the Middle East) and of Union Theological Seminary in 1880. He is the author of several books, including The New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible, Life of Edward Robinson, and Carmina Sanctorum, among others.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Complete Concordance to the Old and New Testament, or a Dictionary and Alphabetical Index to the Bible: With a Concordance to the Apocrypha, and a Compendium of the Holy Scriptures Hugo de S. Charo, a reaching Friar of the Dominican order, who was afterwards a Cardinal, was the first who com piled a Concordance to t e holy Scriptures: he died in the year 1262. He had studied the Bible very closely, and for carrying on this great and laborious work the more successfully, we are told he employed five hundred Monks of his order to assist him. He framed an Index of all the declinable words, and referred to the places where they were to be found. This Latin Concordance has been frequently printed with improvements; and since that time works of this sort have been brought to much greater perfection than formerly. At first it was thought sufficient to specify the chapter wherein the word occurred, with these letters a, b, c, d, as marks to point out the beginning, the middle, or the end of the chapter. But after Robert St hens, in the year 1545, had divided the chapters of the Bible into verses, the verses likewise began to be numbered, and ihe letters in the editions of the Concordances to be suppressed. And' in 1555 this eminent Printer published his fine Concordance, wherein the chapters and verses are exactly distinguished.
