Book Description
Though noise reduction and speech enhancement problems have been studied for at least five decades, advances in our understanding and the development of reliable algorithms are more important than ever, as they support the design of tailored solutions for clearly defined applications. In this work, the authors propose a conceptual framework that can be applied to the many different aspects of noise reduction, offering a uniform approach to monaural and binaural noise reduction problems, in the time domain and in the frequency domain, and involving a single or multiple microphones. Moreover, the derivation of optimal filters is simplified, as are the performance measures used for their evaluation.

Book Description
Over the past two decades there have been many major new developments in the field of urban sound environment. Jian Kang introduces and examines these key developments, including: the development of prediction methods for urban sound propagation establishment and application of noise-mapping software new noise control measures and design methods. Also covered is the new EU directive on noise and the substantial actions it has brought about across Europe. As the importance of soundscape, acoustic comfort and sound environment design have become widely recognized, Urban Sound Environments is a thoroughly useful book for students and practitioners in a wide range of fields, from urban planning and landscape through to architecture and acoustics.

Book Description
A young man begins a journey from Saudi Arabia, believing it will end with his death in England. If his mission succeeds, he will go to his god a martyr - and many innocents will die with him. For David Banks, an armed protection officer, charged with neutralizing the threat to London's safety, his role is no longer clear-cut: one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter: dangerous distinctions to a police officer with his finger on the trigger. Soon the two men's paths will cross. Before then, their commitment will be shaken by the journeys that take them there. The suicide bomber and the policeman will have cause to question the roads they've chosen. Win or lose, neither will be the same again...

Book Description
From the very beginnings of sound recording, engineers have strived to reproduce the original sound as purely as possible and overcome the noise that technology leaves in recordings. However, this desire denies the fact that technologically mediated sound is always shaped and filtered by themany channels it travels through as it is recorded and reproduced. The noise that each medium inscribes on recorded sound is not just inescapable - it is fundamental to the sonic contours that characterize recorded music. But how exactly do media technologies shape sound and music? And how have theychanged what we listen for in music over time?In The Logic of Filtering, author Melle Jan Kromhout develops an extensive media archaeological analysis of the 'noise of sound media' that covers all the disturbances, distortions, and interferences that media add to the sounds they reproduce. Combining theoretical, historical, and technicalperspectives on sound media, Kromhout sketches a broad history of the problem of noise in sound recording as he traces the ideal of sonic purity back to nineteenth-century acoustics, examines analog and digital technologies, and analyzes the relationship between noise and temporality. In thoroughlyrevising our understanding of how sound media impact the sonorous qualities of music, this book offers a fresh perspective on the interactions between music, media, and listeners.
