Book Description
Excerpt from A Complete System of Harmony The extended and systematized treatment of the Auxiliary Chords is prompted by the conviction that a modification is sorely needed in the prevalent method of harmonic teaching. The vast majority of pupils, leaving Harmony with little or no drill except in the Fundamental Chords, plunge into Counterpoint and Fugue so ill-prepared for the requirements of these advanced studies, that their most laborious efforts produce only painfully unmusical results. At present, the pupil sees little relation between his chords of Harmony and the chord-formations of actual composition, and this is because he has not been taught how to elaborate his fundamental harmonies with auxiliary effects. The principles of Modulation have been presented in a manner that will, it is hoped, make what is the most subtle feature of composition more intelligible and attractive to the pupil. If in many text-books the true philosophy of the matter has not been misconceived, it has certainly been strangely misrepresented. Organ-point is generally treated in so superficial a manner, that it will be a surprise to some that it can be reduced to a scientific system which shows it to be amenable to the laws of Harmony, instead of being an authorized license to violate almost all the pre-established requirements of chord progression. Its treatment in this work is the first attempt, so far as the author is aware, to bring under distinct rules this effective species of composition, and to afford to the pupil a method of learning it. Book Description
"This is a very comprehensive text that combines theory, harmony and voicing material with emphasis placed on voice leading. Although this book's primary focus is on four-note chord voicings on the middle strings of the guitar, much of the knowledge conveyed here can be appreciated and used by all jazz musicians, not only guitarists. Topics covered include: Tensions, Voice Leading Chord Scales, Enharmonic Chordal Substitutions, Fourth Voicings, Chromatic Guide Lines, Triad Over Bass Voicings, and much more! The best part of this book, however, is the unique and practical way the author takes modern harmonic concepts and shows you how to apply them in real music situations! Written for the intermediate to advanced music theory enthusiast who wishes to master this facet of music."

Book Description
Ernst Levy was a visionary Swiss pianist, composer, and teacher who developed an approach to music theory that has come to be known as "negative harmony." Levy's theories have had a wide influence, from young British performer/composer Jacob Collier to jazz musicians like Steve Coleman. His posthumous text, A Theory of Harmony, summarizes his innovative ideas. A Theory of Harmony is a highly original explanation of the harmonic language of the modern era, illuminating the approaches of diverse styles of music. By breaking through age-old conceptions, Levy was able to reorient the way we experience musical harmony. British composer/music pedagogue Paul Wilkinson has written a new introduction that offers multiple points of entry to Levy’s work to make this text more accessible for a new generation of students, performers, and theorists. He relates Levy's work to innovations in improvisation, jazz, twentieth-century classical music, and the theoretical writings of a wide range of musical mavericks, including Harry Partch, Hugo Riemann, and David Lewin. Wilkinson shows how A Theory of Harmony continues to inspire original musical expression across multiple musical genres.
