Book Description
Early childhood caries is of significant importance to the growth and development of preschool children. Multiple studies have highlighted how the lesion, if left untreated, results in retarded growth of the child. There are multiple studies on caries in general and less of such publications on early childhood caries in comparison. Yet, the impact of early childhood caries on the life and course of child development is significant. This piece of work pooled together publications on early childhood caries around the world. It highlighted the profile, pattern and risk factors for early childhood caries for 40 countries and pulled together information on 85 of the 193 United Nations countries where there are publications on the lesion. The authors were able to draw a global map of the disease profile and develop recommendations on important next steps for the global management of this lesion. Though the first and last chapters in the book summarise the global profile of early childhood caries, the book highlights country-specific peculiarities in the risk factors and early childhood caries prevention programmes. The authors did assume the story of early childhood caries is the same across the globe. This book was developed with the guiding principle that each country needs to understand the pattern of their early childhood caries epidemic so that they can develop appropriate programmes to address the countrys needs.

Early Childhood Oral Health coalesces all the important information related to this topic in a comprehensive reference for students, academics, and practitioners. This second edition expands the scope of the first and puts an additional focus on interprofessional and global efforts that are necessary to manage the growing disease crisis and screening and risk assessment efforts that have expanded with the boom of new technologies. With updated references and incorporating the latest research, chapters address the biology and epidemiology of caries, the clinical management of early childhood caries, risk assessment, and early diagnosis. Other topics include public health approaches to managing caries worldwide, implementation of new caries prevention programs, fluoride regimens, and community programs, and family oral health education. Brand new are four chapters on the medical management of early childhood caries, considerations for children with special needs, interprofessional education and practice, and how the newest policy issues and the Affordable Care Act affect dental care. Book Description
Over the centuries health has evolved as a concept from an individual concern to a world wide social goal. Together with various other factors health has an important place in developing human capital. In India, children comprise 40 per cent of the rapidly growing population; compared to this rapid expansion, the provision of health care to these children is poor. Children, especially those with special needs constitute one of the high risk groups and have almost twice the unmet oral health care needs as their peers without special needs across all income levels. Due to complication of the disability and the cumulative nature of disease, regular and consistent training with proper oral health care is important for these children to enable them to realize their full potential. Above all, it is a combination of approaches, the best way of sharing the responsibility for healthy development of children of all cultures; though more challenges await down the lane.
