Book Description
Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Syriac Manuscripts, Vol. 1 of 2: Preserved in the Library of the University of Cambridge Although the collection of Syriac manuscripts in the Cambridge University Library cannot be said to be remarkable either for its size or in general for its antiquity, it may at least claim to be fairly representative and to possess several manuscripts of the first importance. It is proposed here to give some account of the formation of this collection, and, in view of the number of Syriac manuscripts of S. Indian origin which it contains, to append a few introductory notes upon the Syriac literature of S. India generally. It is very doubtful whether the University or any of the Colleges possessed a single Syriac MS. previous to 1632. In this year died William Bedwell, the father of Cambridge Orientalists, who shares with the Leyden scholar Thomas van Erpe (1584-1625) the honour of opening Arabic literature.
