Book Description
The digital image processing requirements of today's industry are increasing at an astounding rate. With the faster satellite data transmission rates and more frequent data collection periods, both spatial storage and processing speed problems are becoming more prevalent. Digital image processing algorithms must be precise and efficient to meet these needs. This research project studies the implementation of an image smoothing algorithm as a combination of custom tailored hardware and firmware, i.e., using bit slice design. Bit slice microprocessor design involves the configuration of very fast bit slice devices and the microprogramming necessary to command the hardware to perform a specific task. The result is a high-speed processor, but the price paid is the long and complex design time. Fixed instruction set microprocessor based design is more common but does not permit the same flexibility in hardware configuration or software coding. Hence, the design time is much shorter and less difficult. (Theses).

Book Description
Algorithms to do signal processing such as fourier transform and filtering have long been established. With the advance of digital technology, digital signal processing is slowly replacing its analog counterpart. This paper sets out to investigate the problems associated with using present technology microprocessors in order to implement digital signal processing particularly digital filtering. It also outlines the methods of implementing digital filters and compares the various methods with each other.

Book Description
Newnes Microprocessor Pocket Book explains the basic hardware operation of a microprocessor and describes the actions of the various types of instruction that can be executed. A summary of the characteristics of many of the popular microprocessors is presented. Apart from the popular 8- and 16-bit microprocessors, some details are also given of the popular single chip microcomputers and of the reduced instruction set computer (RISC) type processors such as the Transputer, Novix FORTH processor, and Acorn ARM processor. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book discusses the principles involved in both parallel and serial input-output interfaces and gives details of the common standards used for parallel and serial input-output systems. Although discrete logic can be used for input-output interfaces, most microprocessor-based systems use specially developed integrated circuits for this purpose. Examples of these special interface chips are described with details of their internal arrangement and the basic techniques for programming their modes of operation. This covers parallel and serial input-output chips, counters and timers as well as one or two of the multifunction peripheral chips that are available. Data formats, instruction sets, display systems, and system development are also considered. This monograph will be of interest to students and to anyone involved in designing, servicing, or just wishing to learn more about microprocessor-based systems.
