Book Description
No one in Bent Creek expected the town's bad boy to fall for the girl-next-door librarian . . . Jackson My life took ten wrong turns when I left Bent Creek. But now I'm back to help my brothers get the one thing that matters most to us--our family's ranch. The plan is simple: fix the place up, pay the taxes, live there for five years, and it's ours. So I move in, ready to set aside my messed up life for something with a purpose. Ready to forget the past with my family and the Nobles and build a life for the future. Yet I didn't expect to end up with the town librarian as a roommate. Emily is quiet and beautiful. But if she's as smart as she seems, she'd know to stay far away from me and my last name. Emily When I get evicted from my apartment, I can either go crawling back to my disapproving dad or sleep in my car. But seeing Jackson Harker back in town reminds me that there's another place I could stay temporarily--his family's abandoned house. Desperate to avoid another night in my car, I sneak into the house--to find Jackson already staying there. I'm not about to stick around, not with his reputation and definitely not with the way I find myself attracted to him, but a spring snowstorm takes the decision out of my hands. It's just one night, on one air mattress. One night turns into two, and then three, and before I know it, I'm finding that so much I'd heard about Jackson Harker is wrong. The longer I stay, the more I fall for him. But the danger that comes with him is real. Marybeth I'm the happiest I've ever been with Gabe. We've moved into a small house together, he's busy with plans to get the family ranch back with his brothers Jackson and Nick, and I've finally decided on a way to get my shop to survive the upcoming summer in our small town. But there's one person who isn't happy with any of it--my brother, Luke. Luke can't set aside the past, and he's convinced the Harkers are back to stir up trouble. When I try to reason with him, he gives me an ultimatum: choose a side. But how can I pick between my family and the man I love? It doesn't matter, though, because Luke chooses for me. He's determined to get the Harkers to leave town, and he doesn't care who stands in his way. This is a story of family, romance, and friendship told through 3 viewpoints--Emily, Jackson, and Marybeth. If you love cowboys, Yellowstone-style drama, big families, small western towns filled with secrets, and sweet romance with a touch of suspense, this book is for you! A Bent Creek Redemption is the first full-length book in the Harker Brothers Ranch series. For Marybeth and Gabe's story, be sure to check out the prequel novella, A Bent Creek Christmas.

Larkin Nick Harker left me without a word eleven years ago when his family fell apart. And now he's back. He says he's here to help his brother buy back the ranch their family lost when his dad went to prison. But I know what he really wants. He wants the one thing he can never have--a second chance with me. I won't let Nick disappoint me again. Especially now that I have a son to think of. But Nick keeps doing everything right, so when I start getting anonymous texts hinting that he's keeping secrets from me, I don't want to believe them. Even when the texts grow more threatening. Nick I swore I'd never come back to Bent Creek. This town and the Nobles took everything from me. But my brother needs help, and he's the one person I won't let down. Even though his mission to buy back the ranch is a terrible idea, I won't leave town until I make him see sense about Marybeth Noble and the danger he's in with her. The one thing I didn't count on was falling for Larkin again. One look at her, and I can't leave. I don't deserve to have her back, but I refuse to let anyone hurt her again. No matter what this town thinks of me and my family, I'll protect Larkin and her son. Marybeth Gabe and I are happy. All of the bad blood between our families is in the past--and that's where it should stay. But Nick doesn't trust me. Which is fine. After all, I don't know if I trust him not to break Larkin's heart all over again. My best friend was devastated when he left, and I'll be the one to pick up the pieces when it happens again. Nick might never forgive my family, but all I want is to move on with Gabe and run my shop in peace. Until Nick drops a secret that I never expected. Lee's Lieutenants Third Volume Abridged
Author: Douglas Southall Freeman
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1451603258
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 932
Book Description
Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command is the most colorful and popular of Douglas Southall Freeman's works. A sweeping narrative that presents a multiple biography against the flame-shot background of the American Civil War, it is the story of the great figures of the Army of Northern Virginia who fought under Robert E. Lee. The Confederacy won resounding victories throughout the war, but seldom easily or without tremendous casualties. Death was always on the heels of fame, but the men who commanded -- among them Jackson, Longstreet, and Ewell -- developed as leaders and men. Lee's Lieutenants follows these men to the costly battle at Gettysburg, through the deepening twilight of the South's declining military might, and finally to the collapse of Lee's command and his formal surrender in 1865. To his unparalleled descriptions of men and operations, Dr. Freeman adds an insightful analysis of the lessons learned and their bearing upon the future military development of the nation. Accessible at last in a one-volume edition abridged by noted Civil War historian Stephen W. Sears, Lee's Lieutenants is essential reading for all Civil War buffs, students of war, and admirers of the historian's art as practiced at its very highest level.

Rogues Redeemed
Author: Mary Jo Putney
Publisher: Canelo
ISBN: 1804364002
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 921
Book Description
Let yourself be swept off your feet by the dashing heroes and heroines of the Rogues Redeemed series. Includes the first three books; Once a Soldier, Once a Rebel and Once a Scoundrel. Once a Soldier: As heir to a title, Will Masterson should have stayed home and tended his responsibilities. Instead, he went to war. After years fighting the French, he intends his current mission to be his last. But all his plans are forgotten when he arrives in the small mountain stronghold of San Gabriel and meets her. Knowing herself to be too tall, strong and unconventional, Athena Markham has always gloried in her independence. Yet for the first time in her life, she finds a man who might be her match. Two of a kind, too brave for their own good, Athena and Will vow to do whatever it takes to vanquish San Gabriel’s enemies, while finding a love deeper than they’d ever imagined. Once a Rebel: As Washington burns, Callista Brooke is trapped in the battle between her native England and her adopted homeland. She is on the verge of losing everything, including her life, when a handsome Englishman cuts through the violent crowd to claim her as his. Lord George Gordon Audley was Callista’s best friend, but his attempt to rescue her from a loathsome arranged marriage had him sent on a one-way trip to the penal colony of Australia. Against all odds, he survived, and now he vows to do whatever is necessary to protect Callista. But their friendship has become a dangerous passion that may save or destroy them when they challenge the aristocratic society that exiled them both. Once a Scoundrel: Gabriel Hawkins was born to command the sea, until he left the Royal Navy in disgrace and was disowned by his family. Now captaining his own ship, earning his living through dubious means, he is the best choice to ransom an aristocratic beauty captured by Barbary pirates. Facing the prospect of a life as a harem slave, Lady Aurora Lawrence is beyond horrified. Her only hope of escape lies in a quiet, steely captain who ignites an attraction in her that burns hot within the close confines of his ship. But even if they endure the perils of the waves, can their love survive a return to England, where the distance between a disgraced captain and an earl’s daughter is wider than the ocean? An Abolitionist in the Appalachian South
Author: Ezekiel Birdseye
Publisher: Univ. of Tennessee Press
ISBN: 9780870499647
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
"This volume, a collection of letters written by an abolitionist businessman who lived in East Tennessee prior to the Civil War, provides one of the clearest firsthand views yet published of a region whose political, social, and economic distinctions have intrigued historians for more than a century." "Between 1841 and 1846, Birdseye expressed his views and observations in letters to Gerrit Smith, a prominent New York reformer who arranged to have many of them published in antislavery newspapers such as the Emancipator and Friend of Man." "Those letters, reproduced in this book, drew on Birdseye's extensive conversations with slaveholders, nonslaveholders, and the slaves themselves. He found that East Tennesseans, on the whole, were antislavery in sentiment, susceptible to rational abolitionist appeal, and generally far more lenient toward individual slaves than were other southerners. Opposed to slavery on economic as well as moral grounds, Birdseye sought to establish a free labor colony in East Tennessee in the early 1840s and actively supported the region's abortive effort in 1842 to separate itself from the rest of the state."--[book jacket].
