Let them play one of these "solitaire" versions. Set them a target - "How many squares can you solve and colour in 10 minutes?" "See if you can get 3 pentominoes coloured!" Better still, play the game with them. You can pick up any stumbling blocks they have and help them through them. You will get quicker as well! Although the emphasis in the game is on multiplication, the children will also get used to looking at the numbers left on the grid and working on what they need to throw. The best thing about this is that it happens automatically in the context of the game. The child thinks "I want that square - 48 - I hope I throw an 8!" And there you have it! They are working on their division. This is ideal for KS1 and KS2, but also great for KS3 or KS4, where students need some revision but don't want to use traditional methods.
