Book Description
Do you love pets but feel powerless to help those less fortunate than yours? Ever wonder how you can improve the lives of the homeless cats living in your community, or what you can do to convince your neighbors to fix their dog? How you can be an effective animal advocate when you don't have a big budget, or the best way to approach a vet for help with a stray animal? These questions, and more, are answered in $5 For a Cat Head. Because none of the animals featured in the book could write their own histories, the author recounts their lives. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, never is the wonder and mystery of these companion animals overlooked. After reading $5 For a Cat Head, you will:⢠Realize why spay/neuter surgery should be your first priority when promoting pet welfare.⢠Understand some of the realities low-income pet owners face when trying to care for their pets.⢠Consider some issues involved in getting dogs off chains.⢠Explore feral cat concerns.⢠Learn steps you can take to encourage feline spay/neuter surgery at an early age.⢠Discover ways you can help others get their pets fixed.⢠Recognize your responsibilities when offering homeless pets for adoption.⢠Review some of the reasons people do not properly care for their pets.⢠Determine potential interventions with injured animals.⢠Discern the best organizations to which you can donate your money or time.⢠Find inspiration to improve pet welfare in your community.⢠Gain perspective on the catchphrase 'no-kill'.Drawing upon experience gained over 23 years, $5 For a Cat Head shows you how to promote pet welfare by focusing first on efforts to fix pets and halt the reproduction of unwanted animals. It provides practical tips that will jump-start your efforts to help pets in your community while telling stories of the amazing animals encountered over decades of animal welfare work. You'll rediscover the joy, grace, comfort, peace, and beauty of those precious cats and dogs who stand with us as our beloved companions.

Book Description
This book introduces formal grammar theories that play a role in current linguistic theorizing (Phrase Structure Grammar, Transformational Grammar/Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Construction Grammar, Tree Adjoining Grammar). The key assumptions are explained and it is shown how the respective theory treats arguments and adjuncts, the active/passive alternation, local reorderings, verb placement, and fronting of constituents over long distances. The analyses are explained with German as the object language. The second part of the book compares these approaches with respect to their predictions regarding language acquisition and psycholinguistic plausibility. The nativism hypothesis, which assumes that humans posses genetically determined innate language-specific knowledge, is critically examined and alternative models of language acquisition are discussed. The second part then addresses controversial issues of current theory building such as the question of flat or binary branching structures being more appropriate, the question whether constructions should be treated on the phrasal or the lexical level, and the question whether abstract, non-visible entities should play a role in syntactic analyses. It is shown that the analyses suggested in the respective frameworks are often translatable into each other. The book closes with a chapter showing how properties common to all languages or to certain classes of languages can be captured.

Book Description
Celebrate a year in the life of The Cat Named Carrot, as she goes from humble beginnings in a shelter to a loving home with a family of three adorable little girls and internet stardom. Bailey was certainly no ordinary cat—an orange tabby who gained fans around the world when his humanlike antics went viral. Sadly, when 14-year-old Bailey died, his family grieved their loss. They’d never find a cat quite like him—or would they? Then along came Carrot, an orange tabby kitten born as a stray, who appeared just as Erin Merryn and her young girls Abby, Hannah, and baby Claire were mending their broken hearts. Written in the voice of Carrot, follow her remarkable journey from shelter cat to top Instagram celebrity feline. Much like Bailey did, she loves spending time with her human family: making mischief with her girl gang; going joyriding in a pint-sized pink Barbie Jeep; doing arts-and-crafts projects; modeling a pink tutu and flowery headband; enjoying a spa day complete with fluffy robe and cucumber eye treatments; celebrating Christmas, Easter, and every holiday in between. It’s no wonder that Carrot’s videos have gone viral—garnering millions of views on Ellen, the Dodo, Good Morning America, Access Hollywood, People, and many more. Complete with four-color photos that will leave readers purring with delight, the journal of this sweet, adorable kitty with personality to spare shows us that the human-animal bond runs more than fur deep. It is love that will last a lifetime!
