John Jacob Hunker, son of Johann Martin Hunker and Anna Springer, was born in 1807 in Wurtemberg, Germany. He emigrated with his first wife, Anna Maria Catherine Smith, in 1853. He died in 1886 in Hopewell Township, Seneca County, Ohio. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Ohio.

Catherine died in 1854, and John Jacob married widow Mary Elizabeth (Laoller) Schantz in 1855. Descendants and relatives lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and elsewhere.
