Book Description
This document, which contains information relevant to individuals planning their careers, employers, human resource planners, and training institutions, examines the skill needs of the South African labor market in 1998-2003. The preface presents a brief overview of the factors that have contributed to the high levels of unemployment and patterns of poor job creation that will likely persist in South Africa through 2003. The introduction describes two major sources of the data: (1) a survey that asked 273 randomly selected South African companies across 8 broad economic sectors about future labor market trends and their future work force needs; and (2) a mail survey in which 22,585 university graduates answered questions regarding their income, occupation, work status, employer, and years of work experience. The remaining 85% of the document consists of a series of tables, charts, and lists detailing future employment prospects and income projections for more than 200 occupations in the following 13 categories: professionals; engineers; engineering technologists and technicians; architecture; natural science; medical; health-related; educational; humanities; accountants, financial, and economic; art, sport, and entertainment; managers; and clerical, artisan, and semiskilled. (Thirty-nine tables/figures are included.) (MN)

Between Parentheses: Essays, Articles and Speeches, 1998-2003
Author: Roberto Bolaño
Publisher: New Directions Publishing
ISBN: 0811220508
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
The essays of Roberto Bolano in English at last. Between Parentheses collects most of the newspaper columns and articles Bolano wrote during the last five years of his life, as well as the texts of some of his speeches and talks and a few scattered prologues. “Taken together,” as the editor Ignacio Echevarría remarks in his introduction, they provide “a personal cartography of the writer: the closest thing, among all his writings, to a kind of fragmented ‘autobiography.’” Bolano’s career as a nonfiction writer began in 1998, the year he became famous overnight for The Savage Detectives; he was suddenly in demand for articles and speeches, and he took to this new vocation like a duck to water. Cantankerous, irreverent, and insufferably opinionated, Bolano also could be tender (about his family and favorite places) as well as a fierce advocate for his heroes (Borges, Cortázar, Parra) and his favorite contemporaries, whose books he read assiduously and promoted generously. A demanding critic, he declares that in his “ideal literary kitchen there lives a warrior”: he argues for courage, and especially for bravery in the face of failure. Between Parentheses fully lives up to his own demands: “I ask for creativity from literary criticism, creativity at all levels.”

United Arab Emirates Court of Cassation Judgments 1998 - 2003
Author: Richard Price
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047414624
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 428
Book Description
United Arab Emirates Court of Cassation Judgments provides, for the first time in any language, summaries of key decisions of the Courts of Cassation (Supreme Courts) of Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates from 1998 - 2003. These decisions concern questions of jurisdiction, conflict of laws, banking, insurance, maritime law, arbitration and commerce in general and will be of major relevance and interest to all entities (and their legal advisors) doing business in and with the United Arab Emirates. The essence of each decision is first set out in a few lines and then explained in more detail, though still in a summarized format that is readily assimilable by the businessman as well as the lawyer. The book does much to reveal the workings, attitudes and jurisprudence of the United Arab Emirates Courts, an area often of mystery to businessmen.
