Book Description
The engineering research reports in this document resulted from the ninth year of the undergraduate Transportation Engineering Fellows Program during the summer of 2000. The ten-week program, sponsored by the Advanced Institute program of the Southwest Region University Transportation Center (SWUTC), the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), and the Civil Engineering Department at Texas A & M University, provides undergraduate students in Civil Engineering with the opportunity to learn more about transportation engineering through participation in a transportation research program. The program design allows the students to interact directly with a faculty member or TTI researcher in developing a research proposal, conducting appropriate research, and documenting the research results. This compendium contains reports on two transportation research projects. One paper documents an evaluation of signal control strategies using data from Wellborn Road and the CORSIM simulation model. A few recommendations for additional studies were made based on the procedures developed in the project. No specific conclusions could be drawn concerning specific control strategy changes. The other paper compares the perception of the Houston Metro bus service and the bus volume and ridership. Past bus volumes and perception were compared and used with future scenarios. An all-bus plan and a projection of the light-rail operating condition were used as comparison cases. Several case-specific conclusions were drawn from the analysis, as well as some general conclusions concerning the methodology used.

Book Description
Pavements are engineered structures essential to transportation, commerce and trade, and everyday life. In order for them to perform as expected, they must be designed, constructed, maintained, and managed properly. Providing a comprehensive overview of the subject, Pavement Engineering: Principles and Practice, Second Edition covers a wide range of topics in asphalt and concrete pavements, from soil preparation to structural design and construction. This new edition includes updates in all chapters and two new chapters on emerging topics that are becoming universally important: engineering of sustainable pavements and environmental mitigation in transportation projects. It also contains new examples and new figures with more informative schematics as well as helpful photographs. The text describes the significance of standards and examines traffic, drainage, concrete mixes, asphalt binders, distress and performance in concrete and asphalt pavements, and pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. It also contains a chapter on airport pavements and discusses nondestructive tests for pavement engineering using nuclear, deflection-based, electromagnetic, and seismic equipment. The authors explore key concepts and techniques for economic analysis and computing life-cycle cost, instrumentation for acquiring test data, and specialty applications of asphalt and concrete. The Second Edition includes more relevant issues and recently developed techniques and guidelines for practical problems, such as selection of pavement type, effect of vehicle tires, and use of smart sensors in rollers and software for drainage analysis. This book presents in-depth, state-of-the-art knowledge in a range of relevant topics in pavement engineering, with numerous examples and figures and comprehensive references to online resources for literature and software. It provides a good understanding of construction practices essential for new engineers and materials processing and construction needed for solving numerous problems.

Book Description
This synthesis report will be of special interest to maintenance, construction, and traffic engineers and others interested in the use of impact attenuation devices or crash cushions for highway operations. Information is provided on the performance and operational experience of 13 crash cushion devices in current use in the United States and Canada, including physical characteristics, test results, and guidelines for use. Both permanent and temporary devices are included. Crash cushions can provide a cost-effective method for reducing or alleviating motor vehicle related injuries or fatalities, which constitute a major societal cost. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents information on the physical and impact performance characteristics of 13 crash cushions in current use in North America. Information on performance evaluation guidelines, physical characteristics, performance characteristics, selection considerations, and the operational experience of individual designs for crash cushions is provided. The synthesis concludes with possible future trends for crash cushions and appendices containing the crash test requirements of NCHRP Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, a crash cushion glossary, and a bibliography.
