Book Description
This book is whimsical tour of the author's 101 all-time teams by various categories, for example; animal names, food names, actual teams, ethnic groups and more. All players represented in this book played in the major leagues at the position in which I have placed them. The guidelines the author followed are: 1) each team consists of the eight position players, a designated hitter, four starting pitchers and one relief pitcher; 2) the author used last names in all sections except People, Places, and Things, where I use first or last names. In one case, for my body parts team, he could not find a catcher with either a first or last name to qualify, so he had to come up with a body part nickname: "Schnozz" Lombardi. Nor could he find a shortstop that met his requirements, so he picked Larry Kopf. Kopf is German for head. This is a fun look at our national pastime from the zany perspective a lifelong baseball fan.

Book Description
The All-Time Themed Baseball Teams, Volume 1 is a compilation of Major League all-star teams based on various themes. Theme examples include: U.S. Presidents, consisting of the best Major League players who happen to have a name that matches the last name of a U.S. President; Colors, representing players whose names contain one of the Crayola crayon colors. Other themes include: Food: Frank(s) and Bergers (Burgers), Bacon and Curry, Salmon and Roe and Ham and Fowl(er), these are just a few of my favorite food related player names that might be found on the All Food Team. Occupations: A (Max) Butcher, a (Dusty) Baker but no John Candelaria maker. This team looks for player last names that reference an occupation that someone might have. Animals: (Steve) Lyon, the Tigers and (Doug) Bair, oh my. This team consists of player names containing an animal. Last Name Is Also a First Name Team Whether you're Howard Frank or Frank Howard, you could be on this team containing players whose last name could also be used conventionally as a first name. Flora: A (Pete) Rose by any other name would still smell as sweet and is still not in the Hall of Fame. That is why we plant our (Bob) Seeds so that they grow a strong (Charley) Root system and blossom into a (Homer) Bush, all the while making sure our (Norm) Branch is not covered with (Mike) Ivie. Flowers, trees or flora parts are what these players need to have in their names to be considered for this theme team. Body Parts: You have to have strong (Ricky) Bones and a lot of (Jim Ray) Hart, but most of all, you must use your (Dave) Brain to its fullest potential. To be included on this team, the player's name must contain a body part. Financial: A (Brad) Penny for your thoughts. Personally, I'd rather put my (Don) Money in the (Ernie) Banks or a money market (Lee) Pfund so I can earn a good deal of (Dave) Cash. This team consists of players that have financial terms in their names. Locations: From (Kelly) Paris to (Gus) Britain, from (Al) Holland to (Clyde) Milan, from (Miguel) Cairo to (Frank) Brazil - though all-in-all, I'd rather take a rocket ship to the (Wally) Moon. This theme team includes players with well-known geographic locations in their names. Smiths: A team composed of players whose last name is Smith. Jones: Not to be outdone by the Smiths, a team of players whose last name is Jones. Gonzalez/ Martinez Team: The influence of the Latin player finds its way into a theme team with players whose last name is either Gonzalez or Martinez. Weather: One might expect some (Bob) Hale coming in from the west that might change to some (JT) Snow. Don't expect any (Josh) Fogg, but there could be some (Rich) Gale force winds blowing in, leading to a big (Jake) Freeze. The forecast calls for a heavy dose of (Tim) Raines leading to a potential (Curt) Flood. It won't be long before (Ed) Summers is upon us, so have a (Harry) Bright day. This all (Roy) Weatherly team contains players whose names might be mentioned in a weather report. Z: This team contains only Major Leaguers whose last name begins with the letter Z. Automotive: Whether you drive a (Whitey) Ford, a (Jose) Mercedes or a (Jack) Bentley, each of us can do our part for the environment by not using (Pat) Diesel in our (Chuck) Carr. This theme team consists of players whose names represent a car, truck or motorcycle brand, manufacturer, part or other automotive term. Berry/Bery: Phil Rizzuto never referred to me as a (Earl) Huckleberry. However, he once ate my (Darryl) Strawberry and (Dan) Quisenberry pie. Players that feature "berry" or "bery" somewhere in their names will comprise this delicious team. What's in a name? This is not really a theme team but a list of some of the best and worst names of Major League Baseball players, by position.

Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Winner of the CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year “An instant sports classic.” —New York Post * “Stellar.” —The Wall Street Journal * “A true masterwork…880 pages of sheer baseball bliss.” —BookPage (starred review) * “This is a remarkable achievement.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) A magnum opus from acclaimed baseball writer Joe Posnanski, The Baseball 100 is an audacious, singular, and masterly book that took a lifetime to write. The entire story of baseball rings through a countdown of the 100 greatest players in history, with a foreword by George Will. Longer than Moby-Dick and nearly as ambitious,? The Baseball 100 is a one-of-a-kind work by award-winning sportswriter and lifelong student of the game Joe Posnanski. In the book’s introduction, Pulitzer Prize–winning commentator George F. Will marvels, “Posnanski must already have lived more than two hundred years. How else could he have acquired such a stock of illuminating facts and entertaining stories about the rich history of this endlessly fascinating sport?” Baseball’s legends come alive in these pages, which are not merely rankings but vibrant profiles of the game’s all-time greats. Posnanski dives into the biographies of iconic Hall of Famers, unfairly forgotten All-Stars, talents of today, and more. He doesn’t rely just on records and statistics—he lovingly retraces players’ origins, illuminates their characters, and places their accomplishments in the context of baseball’s past and present. Just how good a pitcher is Clayton Kershaw in the 21st-century game compared to Greg Maddux dueling with the juiced hitters of the nineties? How do the career and influence of Hank Aaron compare to Babe Ruth’s? Which player in the top ten most deserves to be resurrected from history? No compendium of baseball’s legendary geniuses could be complete without the players of the segregated Negro Leagues, men whose extraordinary careers were largely overlooked by sportswriters at the time and unjustly lost to history. Posnanski writes about the efforts of former Negro Leaguers to restore sidelined Black athletes to their due honor and draws upon the deep troves of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and extensive interviews with the likes of Buck O’Neil to illuminate the accomplishments of players such as pitchers Satchel Paige and Smokey Joe Williams; outfielders Oscar Charleston, Monte Irvin, and Cool Papa Bell; first baseman Buck Leonard; shortstop Pop Lloyd; catcher Josh Gibson; and many, many more. The Baseball 100 treats readers to the whole rich pageant of baseball history in a single volume. Engrossing, surprising, and heartfelt, it is a magisterial tribute to the game of baseball and the stars who have played it.
