History

In 1987, community leaders formed a Greater Cleveland Literacy Coalition (which later became Cleveland Reads) to coordinate and strengthen literacy efforts in response to local literacy organizations in the Greater Cleveland area.

These organizations had a common goal: they were all organized and directed by individuals working towards a more literate society. They encompassed after-school programs for youth, GED and basic education classes for adults, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. However, as these local organizations increased in number, they desired a process to come together in order to address common interests and problems, to effectively respond to new challenges, and to strengthen their service delivery.

As a result, the Community Literacy Council, now called the Literacy Network (LitNet), was formed to concentrate exclusively on the enhancement of programming and services. LitNet’s role is to advise, consult with, and make recommendations to Cleveland Reads’ Board of Directors and staff.
